Science

At Christ the King, our science curriculum plans and resources are carefully sequenced and include a cohesive and detailed rationale, following the National Curriculum for science. Our science curriculum has been designed and sequenced to fit the national curriculum aims and to allow the children to build upon their knowledge from EYFS to year 6.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, the principle focus is to enable children to explore the world around them, through carefully planned lessons. Children are introduced to scientific vocabulary and encouraged to use it when explaining their understanding. Furthermore, want to build on the children’s natural curiosity and show them what an amazing universe we share. We firmly believe that a good understanding of scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding helps to support pupils’ work across the curriculum. We want to develop children’s ideas of working that will enable them to make sense of the world they live in.

This belief is built upon in Key Stage 2, where each National Curriculum topic is introduced through beautifully illustrated booklets, full of concrete examples that put science in context for all learners. The topic booklet is used alongside a set of 6 lessons in PowerPoint format, designed to allow teachers to easily tailor each lesson to meet the need of their pupils.

These all-inclusive resources ensure all children gain a deep understanding of scientific concepts and skills as they develop excitement and curiosity about the world around them.

The evidence-based format of every lesson delivers ambitious and engaging teaching and learning. Substantive and disciplinary knowledge content is organised into:

  • A unit map and differentiated objectives
  • Spaced retrieval
  • Literacy and Scientific literacy strategies
  • Numeracy activities
  • Working scientifically and Scientific enquiry, (including integrated instruction to reduce cognitive load)
  • Formative and summative assessment
  • Metacognitive reflection tasks

This afternoon Conkers have learnt all about an engineer called Elijah McCoy. Elijah was responsible for designing an invention that allowed oil to drip on to train wheels to keep the locomotive running smoothly along the tracks! Fantastic listening skills on show!#CTKScience

This morning year 2 had the pleasure of a scientific workshop all about plants. We used our bodies to create images of the different things plants need to grow healthily! There was an abundance of teamwork, creativity and knowledge on show. #ctkScience

Acorn Class had a wonderful science workshop this morning. We learned about an Engineer called Elijah McCoy who invented a machine to drip oil on train wheels to keep them moving smoothly. Today we still use the saying “The real McCoy” all thanks to Elijah. #CTKScience

We looked at an experiment by Charles Henry Turner to see if bees have memories. We were so inspired, I wonder if anyone will conduct this experiment at home #CTKScience ⁦@AsCreatives⁩
